The revival of the classical language of Rome that began in fifteenth century Florence, prizing symmetry, proportion and the orders as Vitruvius had described them. Brunelleschi opened it with the dome of Florence Cathedral, Alberti gave it a theory, and Palladio carried it into the villa and the pattern book, from which it spread across Europe and eventually the world.
