The Basilica di Santa Croce is a minor basilica and the principal Franciscan church of Florence, Italy, situated on the Piazza di Santa Croce about 800 meters southeast of the Duomo, on ground that was marshland outside the city walls when it was founded. It serves as the burial place of many notable Italians, including Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli from the Italian Renaissance, along with the poet Foscolo, the philosopher Gentile, and the composer Rossini, which has earned it the name Temple of the Italian Glories.
