The Sistine Chapel is a chapel in the Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the pope, in Vatican City. Built between 1473 and 1481 for Pope Sixtus IV, whose name it carries, it has since served as the site of both religious and administrative papal activity, including the papal conclave that elects a new pope. Its fame rests chiefly on the frescoes covering its interior, most notably the ceiling and The Last Judgment, both painted by Michelangelo.
