The wrought iron lattice tower built by Gustave Eiffel's company as the entrance monument of the 1889 Paris Exposition, and at 300 meters the tallest structure in the world until 1930. Attacked by artists as a monstrosity while it rose, it became the symbol of Paris and the proof that exposed metal structure could be architecture.

Why this is disputed. Attribution is genuinely contested: engineers Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier drafted the original 1884 design and architect Stephen Sauvestre added the decorative arches and pavilion; Eiffel bought the patent rights from the three of them and his company built the tower under his own name and commercial risk, which is why the tower and this credit carry his name.
