The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture is the architecture school of the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, a college founded by inventor and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859 in New York City. Its architecture curriculum developed within the Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture from 1960 and became its own independent school in 1975, and it took its present name in 1981 following a gift from Cooper Union alumnus and practicing architect Irwin S. Chanin. The schools distinctive design pedagogy took shape from the mid-1960s under architect and Cooper Union graduate John Hejduk, and it offers a five-year professional bachelors degree and a three-semester post-professional masters degree.
