The Japan Institute of Architects (JIA) is a voluntary professional organisation for architects in Japan and an affiliated member of the International Union of Architects. It was formed in May 1987 through the merger of the Japan Architects Association and the Japan Federation of Professional Architects Association, and today has about 4,100 members organised into ten regional chapters covering Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto-Koshinetsu, Tokai, Hokuriku, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku, Kyushu and Okinawa. Its principal aim is to define and promote the social and legal standing of the architectural profession in Japan.
