Grand residences built for a ruler, noble family or head of state: the palace, the palace complex, the chateau and the villa in its historical sense as a landed aristocratic estate house. Belongs here: any named residence built at royal, noble or head-of-state scale, whether still a residence or converted to another use such as a museum. Does not belong here: ordinary domestic housing, grouped under residential buildings, or government buildings that house an office rather than a residence, grouped under government and civic buildings.
