All Palaces of North America

Grand aristocratic-scale residence entries whose subject stands in the United States, Canada or Mexico: the Gilded Age mansion, the plantation great house later read as an aristocratic residence, and the one Mexican royal castle in this subcategory. Belongs here: any named residence this atlas records as standing in North America built or later used at a scale and patronage comparable to this subcategory's European palaces and villas, whether a still-private estate, a National Register historic site or a museum. Does not belong here: an ordinary domestic house, which belongs under Residential Buildings rather than this subcategory at all, or any residence outside North America, each gathered under its own group above.
