Iolani Palace, in Honolulu, was built in 1882 for King Kalakaua of the Kingdom of Hawaii and is the only royal palace on United States soil. Built in a style sometimes described as American Florentine, it incorporated some of the first electric lighting and modern conveniences installed in any royal residence of its era. It served as the official residence of the Hawaiian monarchy until Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown in 1893; she was later confined for a period in an upstairs room of the palace. The building subsequently served as the capitol of the Republic, Territory and early State of Hawaii before being restored as a museum.
