Bishop's Palace, Kirkwall

The Bishop's Palace in Kirkwall, Orkney, Scotland is a twelfth century palace built alongside the adjacent St Magnus Cathedral to house the diocese's first bishop, William the Old of the Norwegian Catholic Church. Built in the Romanesque and later Gothic style, the palace was the residence of the Bishops of Orkney under Norwegian rule and later Scottish control. King Haakon IV of Norway died at the palace in 1263 after the Battle of Largs, an event that marked the end of Norse dominance over the Hebrides. The building now survives as ruins resembling a small castle, cared for by Historic Environment Scotland and open to the public as a scheduled monument.
