Hartlebury Castle is a fortified manor house near Hartlebury in Worcestershire, England, built on land granted to the Bishop of Worcester by King Burgred of Mercia. Bishop Walter de Cantilupe fortified the site in the mid-13th century and his successor Godfrey Giffard completed the work by 1268. It served as the residence of the Bishop of Worcester from the early 13th century until 2007, and its recorded visitors include King Edward I in 1282, Princess Mary in 1526, Queen Elizabeth I in 1575, and King George III and Queen Charlotte in 1788. The Grade I listed building keeps its embattled walls, a moat and a gatehouse added under Henry VI, along with the Hurd Library of 1782, which still holds books from the collections of Alexander Pope and William Warburton. Since 2018 it has been run as a visitor attraction by the Hartlebury Castle Preservation Trust, with state rooms, a county museum, a nature trail and grounds open to the public.
