Chatsworth House is a stately home in the Derbyshire Dales, four miles northeast of Bakewell, England, that has belonged to the Cavendish family, Dukes of Devonshire, since 1549. The present house was built mainly between 1687 and 1708 under the direction of William Talman and Thomas Archer, with later additions by Jeffry Wyattville and landscape work by Joseph Paxton between 1820 and 1840, and its architecture spans English Baroque and Italianate styles. Ownership rests with the Trustees of the Chatsworth Settlement, who lease the house to the Chatsworth House Trust, an independent charity founded in 1981 that operates it as one of Britain's best known stately homes.
