Meiling Palace, also known as Meiling Villa or by its formal name the National Government Chairman Residence, is a large villa in Nanjing, China, built for Soong Meiling, the wife of Chiang Kai-shek, who chaired the Chinese National Government. Located below Purple Mountain about six kilometers from central Nanjing in the Zhongshan Mountain Scenic Area, it is the largest villa in the city, covering more than 2,000 square meters. The villa was completed in 1934 and given by Chiang Kai-shek to his wife on her birthday, March 4; the couple moved in during the summer of 1936, and after China's war with Japan ended in 1946 Chiang used it as his official residence once the National Government returned to Nanjing. Its exterior follows a traditional Chinese style with double eaves and a roof of green glazed tiles carved with more than a thousand phoenixes, painted by the artist Chen Zhifo, while its interior follows a Western style; the building has two main stories, a basement holding an exhibition of Soong Meiling's paintings, and a private chapel on the second floor.
