Royal Country House (Potsdam)

Palaces and Aristocratic Residences

The Royal Country House stands on the Kapellenberg hill in Potsdam, Germany, originally built as a home for the sexton of the nearby Russian Orthodox chapel of Saint Alexander Nevsky, its facade styled after simple German and Russian farmhouses in a log house manner. King Frederick William III used it as a retreat, holding tea parties on its upper floor for as many as forty guests, furnished with a samovar from Tula and tea and table services from the Berlin royal porcelain manufactory. The Russian emperor Nicholas I gave the king a porcelain service decorated with gold leaf and malachite grounds depicting rural scenes, among the house furnishings.
