Christiansborg Palace stands on the small island of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen, its current building completed in 1928 to a Neo-Baroque design by the architect Thorvald Jorgensen after fires destroyed two earlier palaces on the same site, in 1794 and again in 1884. Unlike most former royal palaces, Christiansborg today uniquely houses all three branches of Danish government at once, providing the chamber for the Folketing, Denmark's parliament, the seat of the Danish Supreme Court, and the office of the Prime Minister, while the Danish monarch retains use of a set of formal reception rooms within the building for state occasions. Its granite exterior and copper-clad tower, rising above the surrounding government quarter, replaced an earlier, more ornate palace design that had proven too costly to complete in full. The building's riding grounds and stables, which survived the 1884 fire, remain among the oldest structures on the site.
