Malacanang Palace, overlooking the Pasig River in Manila, is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the Philippines. It was originally built in 1750 as a private summer house before being acquired by the Spanish colonial government and later serving successive administrations under Spanish, American, Japanese and independent Filipino rule. The complex has been expanded and rebuilt multiple times over its history. Today the historic palace building functions primarily as a museum, while an adjacent structure, the Premier Guest House, houses the president's working functions.
