Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture

Schools of Architecture and Design

The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture is the architecture school of the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, a college founded by inventor and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859 in New York City. Its architecture curriculum developed within the Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture from 1960 and became its own independent school in 1975, and it took its present name in 1981 following a gift from Cooper Union alumnus and practicing architect Irwin S. Chanin. The schools distinctive design pedagogy took shape from the mid-1960s under architect and Cooper Union graduate John Hejduk, and it offers a five-year professional bachelors degree and a three-semester post-professional masters degree.

Open Questions (1 open question)
In what year was the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture established as its own school within The Cooper Union, distinct from Cooper Union's 1859 founding and the 1981 renaming for Irwin S. Chanin?

The atlas's own citation (Cooper Union, Wikipedia, "Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture" section) names John Hejduk as having established the program but gives no year; cooper.edu/architecture/about and cooper.edu/architecture/archive, fetched live, also name no year, and the one page found naming a specific process (archives.cooper.edu) returned HTTP 403 to both a direct fetch and WebFetch.

What would resolve this A dated Cooper Union institutional record, course catalog, board minute, or a published history of the school naming the year the architecture curriculum became its own school separate from the School of Art and Architecture.
