Swiss chalet style

Nineteenth-Century Revival and Eclectic Architecture

Swiss chalet style is an architectural style of the late Historicism period, inspired by the rural chalets of Switzerland and the wider Alpine regions of Central Europe, that emerged during the Romantic era of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It spread during the Belle Époque across Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, France and Scandinavia before reaching North America, popular among European nobility drawn to the perceived simple life of mountain dwellers. Its buildings are marked by gabled roofs with wide eaves, exposed construction beams and large brackets, decorative carving and moldings, balconies, large windows and weatherboard cladding often painted in bright colors. The style shaped resort architecture along the Baltic coast and, around 1900 and into the early twentieth century, became a widespread choice for family homes, mansions and hotels.
