Portuguese Colonial Architecture

Portuguese colonial architecture refers to the various styles of Portuguese architecture built across the Portuguese Empire, which at its height extended into South America, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, India, Oceania and East Asia. Many former Portuguese colonies, most notably Brazil, Macau and India, still promote their surviving Portuguese-built architecture as major tourist attractions. Rather than one uniform style, the term covers the many regional building traditions Portuguese colonists and colonial authorities carried and adapted across this wide and long-lived empire.
