Elmina Castle, also known as Fort St. George, was built by the Portuguese in 1482 as the Castelo de Sao Jorge da Mina in what is now Elmina, Ghana, formerly the Gold Coast. It was the first trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea and is the oldest surviving European building in Sub-Saharan Africa.
