Cosmatesque

Cosmatesque, or Cosmati, is a style of geometric decorative inlay stonework typical of the architecture of medieval Italy, especially Rome and its surroundings. It was used most extensively to decorate church floors but also church walls, pulpits and bishops' thrones, and takes its name from the Cosmati, the leading family workshop of craftsmen in Rome who created such marble decorations. The style spread across Europe and was used in prestigious churches, including the Cosmatesque marble floor decorating the high altar of Westminster Abbey.
