High Ranch

High Ranch, also known as split entry, hi-ranch or bi-level ranch, is an American domestic architectural style in which the accommodation is split across two floors reached from a shared entry set between them, with a half flight of stairs leading up to the top floor and a half flight leading down to the lower one. The upper level typically holds the main living spaces, the kitchen, dining area, bedrooms and bathrooms, while the lower floor holds family rooms, laundry and storage space, additional bedrooms, garage access and an exit to the garden. A high ranch house can be built new to this plan, or created by raising an existing single story ranch house on jacks and inserting an entirely new floor beneath it, which makes the style a genuine option for adapting an older ranch house rather than only a form for new construction.
