A kasbah, from the Arabic qasaba meaning fortress, is a citadel or fortified quarter of a city, most commonly associated with North Africa, and known in Spanish by the equivalent term alcazaba. The word can also refer more broadly to a medina quarter, particularly in Algeria, and in various languages the Arabic term or words borrowed from it can also denote a settlement, a fort, a watchtower or a blockhouse.
