Log Building Architecture

Log building is a method of construction using wooden logs, encompassing both historic and modern practice and distinct from timber-framed construction, which uses a jointed wooden framework rather than stacked logs. Beyond the rustic log cabin, the technique has produced log houses built as substantial residences, barns, granaries, blockhouses and garrison structures, churches such as the Ukrainian wooden churches recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and windmills and threshing barns, with notable regional traditions recorded across Russia, including the log churches at Kizhi, as well as Slovenia, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Poland and Japan, and some octagonal Norwegian log churches date to the seventeenth century. As both a building style and a construction method, log building has been applied across residential, agricultural, religious and industrial structures throughout history and across many cultures, rather than being confined to any single building type or region.
