Minangkabau Architecture

Minangkabau architecture is the traditional building style of the Minangkabau people of West Sumatra, Indonesia, best known through the rumah gadang, or big house, also called rumah bagonjong, or spired roof house. These structures serve simultaneously as family residences, meeting halls and ceremonial spaces, and in Minangkabau matrilineal society they are owned by women and passed down from mother to daughter rather than through the male line. A rumah gadang is marked by a dramatic curved roof with multiple upswept, tiered gables rising to points at each end, and by exterior walls incised with painted floral carving around shuttered windows. The style's distinctive horn shaped roofline remains a living symbol of West Sumatran identity, reproduced today on buildings well beyond traditional houses, including government offices, airports and restaurants across the region.
