Noucentisme was a Catalan cultural movement of the early 20th century that arose largely as a reaction against Modernisme in both art and ideology, presenting a view of art nearly opposite to that of the avant-gardists. The term was coined in 1906 by Eugeni d'Ors, following the Italian tradition of naming styles after centuries such as Quattrocento and Cinquecento while playing on the Catalan words for nine and new to suggest a renovation movement, the same year that Josep Carner's Els fruits saborosos and Enric Prat de la Riba's La nacionalitat catalana were published as foundational texts of the movement.
