Palazzo style refers to an architectural style of the 19th and 20th centuries based on the palazzi built by wealthy families of the Italian Renaissance. The term describes a general shape, proportion and cluster of characteristics, symmetrical, corniced, basemented and with neat rows of windows, rather than one specific design, and was applied across nearly two centuries of buildings. Early Palazzo style buildings followed Italian originals closely, but by the late 19th century the style was applied more loosely to commercial buildings much larger than the originals, sometimes drawing details from Romanesque or Gothic sources, and it later saw further use in Postmodern city buildings.
