Second Empire architecture in the United States and Canada is an architectural style popular in both countries in the late 19th century, between 1865 and 1900. It was influenced by the mid-19th century redevelopment of Paris under Napoleon III's Second French Empire, itself partly influenced by earlier French Renaissance styles, and is typically characterized by a mansard roof, elaborate ornament and strong massing, common in public and commercial buildings and some residences.
