Architects working within a non-Western or regional building tradition described on its own terms rather than through the West's ancient-medieval-Renaissance-modern sequence, including the master builders and treatise-writers of traditional Chinese, Islamic, Indian, Japanese and other architectural canons. Belongs here: any architect whose defining practice sits within a distinct regional tradition rather than the Western period sequence above, such as Li Jie, the Song Dynasty official whose Yingzao Fashi treatise codified traditional Chinese timber construction. Does not belong here: an architect of a Western period style, even one contemporary with a regional tradition listed here.
