Design Principles and Theory

The ideas that guide how a building or space is conceived and judged, from broad theoretical positions such as form follows function and genius loci through named critical stances such as ornament and crime and specific analytical tools such as the parti and the Vitruvian triad. Belongs here: any named principle, theoretical stance or design movement an architect or theorist argues for or against. Does not belong here: formal proportioning systems such as the golden ratio, grouped under design systems and proportion theory, or specific sustainable or urban practices, grouped under their own categories even where a principle underlies them.
