Nineteenth-Century Revival and Eclectic Architecture

The nineteenth century's deliberate revivals and eclectic combinations of historical styles, made possible by industrial-era construction and new institutional patronage: the Gothic Revival's return to medieval forms, the Beaux-Arts tradition's formal classicism taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and Art Nouveau's ornamental break from historicism at the century's end. Belongs here: any named style whose primary work dates to the nineteenth century and either revives an earlier historical style or breaks from historicism while remaining pre-modernist in structure and ornament. Does not belong here: the twentieth-century modern movement styles that follow, grouped under Early Modern Movement Architecture, even where a style such as Art Nouveau is sometimes read as a bridge between the two.
