Postmodern and Contemporary Architecture

The styles that followed and reacted against the modern movement from the 1970s onward: postmodern architecture's deliberate return of historical reference and ornament, deconstructivism's fragmented and destabilized forms, and high-tech architecture's celebration of exposed structure and building services as expressive elements. Belongs here: any named style whose primary claim is a conscious departure from, or ironic commentary on, modernist orthodoxy, dating from roughly 1970 to the present. Does not belong here: postwar architecture that still works within the modern movement's own terms, grouped under Postwar and Late Modern Architecture.
