Christopher Wolfgang Alexander (4 October 1936 to 17 March 2022) was an Austrian-born British-American architect and design theorist whose 1977 book A Pattern Language, written with Sara Ishikawa and Murray Silverstein, set out a system of recurring design patterns for towns, buildings and construction, presented in a form its authors compared to a generative grammar a builder could apply directly. Alexander taught architecture at the University of California, Berkeley for nearly forty years, and his pattern based, resident centered approach to design became a major theoretical influence on the New Urbanist movement, which draws on his work to help people reclaim control over their own built environment. He received the American Institute of Architects' First Medal for Research in 1972 and the Vincent Scully Prize in 2009, and died of pneumonia at his home in Binsted, England.
