A Japanese architect, born 1941 in Osaka, who trained himself in architecture without formal schooling after a career as a boxer and a visit to Frank Lloyd Wright's Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. His work is built almost entirely from finely finished exposed reinforced concrete, arranged to bring natural light and a sense of enclosure drawn from Japanese spatial tradition into otherwise minimal volumes.
