Adlai E. Stevenson II Farm

The Adlai E. Stevenson II Farm is a house in Mettawa, Illinois, within what is now the Captain Daniel Wright Woods Forest Preserve, built in 1938 by the firm Perkins, Wheeler and Will after an earlier 1936 house on the site was destroyed by fire. Its Modern International style design draws on 1920s European avant-garde architecture and Prairie School influences, with block-like massing, minimal ornamentation, and a shallow, broadly overhanging hip roof. The house was the home of Adlai Stevenson II, the Illinois governor, two-time Democratic presidential candidate, and United States ambassador to the United Nations during the Cuban Missile Crisis, from 1936 until his death in 1965. It is now owned by the Lake County Forest Preserve District and operates as a museum, and it was designated a National Historic Landmark on April 23, 2014, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
