The palace and fortress of the Nasrid sultans of Granada, built chiefly in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the finest surviving palace of the medieval Islamic world. Its courts of slender columns, pools and muqarnas vaulting, the Court of the Lions above all, carry surface ornament of stucco, tile and calligraphy to a refinement never surpassed.
