An Ansitz is a small residence built for the lower nobility of the Germanic Alpine region, found mainly in South Tyrol, Bavaria and Austria and built from the end of the Middle Ages through the nineteenth century. Unlike a castle, an Ansitz carried little or no fortification, a shift that followed once medieval strongholds lost their military purpose, and its owners instead built comfortable, prestigious homes whose ornate design and furnishings displayed their social standing.
