Aubrey R. Watzek House

The Aubrey R. Watzek House stands at 1061 SW Skyline Boulevard in the Sylvan-Highlands neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, designed by the architect John Yeon and built between 1936 and 1937. Its single-story, U-shaped plan wraps around a central courtyard with a garden and a pool, and its deceptively modest entrance opens onto rooms arranged to frame views of Mount Hood and the surrounding landscape; the house is considered an early and influential example of Modern and Northwest Regional architecture and was included in an architecture exhibition organized by the Museum of Modern Art soon after it was built. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2011, and the University of Oregon now operates it as part of the John Yeon Center for Architecture, hosting tours, meetings and events.
