The Bastille, formally the Bastille Saint-Antoine, was a medieval fortress in Paris that played an important role in the internal conflicts of France and, for most of its history, served as a state prison for the kings of France. On July 14, 1789, it was stormed by a crowd during the French Revolution, becoming a lasting symbol of the French Republican movement, and it was later demolished and replaced by the Place de la Bastille public square.
