Belle Air Plantation

Belle Air is a historic house on the north bank of the James River near Charles City, Virginia, that served generations of slaveholding Virginia families. The surviving house was probably built in the early eighteenth century, likely between about 1725 and 1740, and is considered an unusually well-preserved example of vernacular architecture from the William and Mary period, retaining rare exposed post-medieval timber framing believed to be unique among surviving Virginia frame buildings. The 135 acre property, which includes contributing outbuildings such as a smokehouse and kitchen, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register in 1974.
