Blenheim Palace stands near Woodstock in Oxfordshire, England, built between 1705 and 1722 to a design by the architect John Vanbrugh as a gift from Queen Anne and a grateful nation to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, commemorating his victory at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704. Its monumental English Baroque architecture, set within extensive parkland later landscaped by Lancelot Capability Brown, was unusual for the period in being built for a subject rather than a monarch, and construction was repeatedly disrupted by disputes over funding and design between the Duchess of Marlborough and Vanbrugh. The palace remains the seat of the Dukes of Marlborough and is also known as the birthplace of Winston Churchill in 1874. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 1987.
