Bolon house

The bolon house, known in the Batak Toba language as Ruma Bolon, is a traditional house type of the Batak people of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. It is built mainly of wood with board flooring and a roof of rumbia palm leaves, and its interior follows an open plan divided into areas rather than separate rooms, with sections traditionally set aside for the house's leader, for family gatherings, for married daughters without homes of their own, and for the eldest married son. According to Batak tradition, bolon houses were once the residences of the thirteen kings of the Batak people. Few original bolon houses survive in North Sumatra today, and the remaining examples now mainly serve as tourist attractions.
