Carter Hall is a historic plantation house estate northeast of Millwood in the lower Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, built from 1792 to around 1800 for Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Burwell with help from former general Daniel Morgan. The limestone Georgian mansion has a large portico traditionally attributed to Capitol architect William Thornton, expansive lawns and terraced gardens laid out in 1948, and it served as Stonewall Jackson's headquarters in the fall of 1862 and later hosted Founding Father Edmund Randolph in retirement. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register, the estate was acquired in 1978 by Project Hope, which has used it as a conference center.
