Casina Pio IV is a villa in the gardens of Vatican City, begun in 1558 under Pope Paul IV as the Casina del Boschetto and completed in 1562 after Pope Pius IV took over the project. Pirro Ligorio improved on the original design, giving the building its elliptical courtyard, two freestanding portals and a fountain loggia, with Mannerist stuccoes, ancient Roman sculpture and frescoes by painters including Federico Barocci and Federico Zuccari. Pope Pius XI made it the seat of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in 1936, and it now also houses the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of St Thomas Aquinas.
