Castle Howard is an English Baroque country house at Henderskelfe in North Yorkshire, England, built between 1701 and 1811 for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle to the design of John Vanbrugh, in what was his first work of architecture, with Nicholas Hawksmoor assisting. It has been the home of the Carlisle branch of the Howard family for more than three centuries, though a fire in 1940 destroyed the dome and central hall, and the dome was not rebuilt until 1960 to 1961. A Grade I listed building still owned by a Howard family company, it is widely known for its use as Brideshead Castle in film and television adaptations of the Evelyn Waugh novel Brideshead Revisited.
