Church Hill (Lexington, Virginia)

Church Hill, also known as Timber Ridge Plantation, is a Greek Revival house about 6.5 miles northeast of Lexington in Rockbridge County, Virginia, built around 1848. It is a two-story, three-bay brick house with a rectangular plan, a one-story rear kitchen wing, and stuccoed Doric pilasters at the corners and midpoints of its longer facades. The property is the birthplace of Sam Houston (1793-1863), and a log outbuilding on the grounds is said by local tradition to be built from timber salvaged from Houston's original birth cabin, believed to have stood where the kitchen addition now sits; the house was listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register in 1977 and the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
