CITIC Plaza stands in the Tianhe district of Guangzhou, China, completed in 1997 to a design by the firm Dennis Lau and Ng Chun Man Architects and Engineers. At the time of its completion its twin office towers, rising to 391 meters, were the tallest reinforced concrete buildings in the world, a distinction achieved using high-strength concrete rather than the structural steel more commonly used for buildings of comparable height. Its stepped, symmetrical profile and dual-tower composition were designed to echo traditional Chinese pagoda forms scaled up to modern skyscraper proportions. The complex also includes twin 38-story residential towers flanking the main office towers, along with a shopping podium at its base, making it a large mixed-use development built during Guangzhou's rapid growth as a commercial center in the 1990s.
