The City Palace in Jaipur was begun in 1732 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of the city, as the seat of the Kachwaha Rajput rulers of the former princely state of Jaipur, combining Rajput and Mughal architectural traditions across a series of courtyards, gardens and gateways. Part of the complex remains a residence of the former royal family, while other sections operate as a museum housing royal costumes, armory and manuscripts. The palace stands adjacent to the Jantar Mantar astronomical observatory that Jai Singh also commissioned.
