A data center is a building or dedicated facility built to store, manage and distribute digital information, housing computer systems and the networking, power and cooling equipment that keep them running. Facilities range from small enterprise rooms of a few megawatts of capacity to hyperscale campuses of more than a hundred megawatts, some spanning up to ten million square feet, built for continuous operation with backup power, fire protection and strict environmental control. The type evolved from the room sized computer installations of the 1940s into the globe spanning facilities that major cloud providers now operate to run everyday computing, storage and artificial intelligence workloads.
