David Van Gelder Octagon House

The David Van Gelder Octagon House, also known as Springside, is a historic brick residence at 21 Walnut Street in Catskill, New York, built in 1860 in the eight-sided Octagon Mode popularized in the mid-nineteenth century by the phrenologist Orson Squire Fowler, who promoted the octagonal plan as a superior house design. Each of its two floors contains four large square rooms and four small triangular rooms, with small triangular closets at two corners of each triangular room, and a central staircase rises to a rooftop cupola. A kitchen wing was likely added in the mid-1870s. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 16, 1998.
